Hilton (SF)

Day 1:
Board your overnight transatlantic flight.

Day 2:
Prague, Czech Republic. Welcome to Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. The city straddles the Vltava River with domes, cupolas, spires and pinnacles highlighting its skyline. The remainder of the day is free to start exploring.

Day 3:
Prague. Prague is a 1,000-year-old city preserved in time. See its best-known treasures such as the Old Town’s ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK, once the envy of all of Europe; HRADCANY CASTLE, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Charles Bridge. Browse the shops for hand-cut crystal or art books. Mix with the locals in Wenceslaus Square or stroll along the Vltava River. (B)

Day 4:
Prague. A free day for you to explore the city at your own pace. Your Cruise Director will have other suggestions for things to do. (B)

Day 5:
Prague–Nuremberg, Germany (Embarkation). After lunch, drive to Nuremberg, where your river cruise vessel is docked. Before dinner meet your crew for a WELCOME RECEPTION. (B,D)

Day 6:
Nuremberg. Although Nuremberg suffered extensive damage during WWII, much of it was restored to its original style. Marvel at this historic city with its fabulous gothic churches and elegant patrician houses. Nuremberg’s traditions include its famous Lebkuchen, toy making, and metal working. (B,L,D)

Day 7:
Regensburg. Regensburg is one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities. Architectural highlights included on your tour are the Old Town Hall, the beautiful white and gold OLD CHAPEL, and the Porta Pretoria—gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. The city is the capital of Upper Palatinate, a bustling university town and one of Bavaria’s cultural centers. Before dinner we’ll introduce you to some of Germany’s FAMOUS BEERS! (B,L,D)

Day 8:
Passau–Linz, Austria. Passau, ideally located at the confluence of the Rivers Inn, Ilz, and Danube, is a city of graceful arcades and cobblestone streets. St. Stephen’s Cathedral houses the world’s largest church organ with more than 17,000 pipes. An optional full-day excursion to Salzburg takes in the popular Sound of Music sights. Linz, Austria’s third-largest town, lies on both banks of the Danube and is an important industrial town and busy river port. (B,L,D)

Day 9:
Melk–Vienna. Melk’s magnificent BENEDICTINE ABBEY dominates the town from its commanding hill site and is one of Europe’s largest monasteries. The view from the terrace over the Danube and surrounding countryside is breathtaking! This evening, arrive in Vienna, known as the “City of Music,” which inspired the creative genius of Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss. An optional concert is available tonight. (B,L,D)

Day 10:
Vienna. Once the center of the mighty Habsburg Empire, Austria’s capital has much to offer: the lavish Hofburg Palace, the impressive Vienna Opera House, the majestic Ring Boulevard, and awe-inspiring St. Stephen’s Cathedral, to name just a few of the sights you will enjoy during your city tour. You do not rush through Vienna; you waltz, taking your time to savor each classic sight and sound. Shop in the Kärntnerstrasse and enjoy Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel in a neighborhood café. (B,L,D)

Day 11:
Budapest, Hungary. Budapest, spanning the banks of the Danube, is Eastern Europe’s liveliest and most cosmopolitan metropolis. Seven bridges, including the famous Chain and Elisabeth Bridges, connect ancient Buda on the right bank with Pest on the left. The massive hilltop castle complex with FISHERMEN’S BASTION and the Matthias Church is among the many sights your Local Guide will show you. Shop for renowned peasant embroidery, Herend porcelain, and paprika. (B,L,D)

Day 12:
Budapest (Disembarkation). Your homebound flight arrives the same day. (B)

Avalon Tapestry

Built in 2006, the Avalon Tapestry® is a new type of ship for river cruising, offered exclusively by Avalon Waterways on the English-speaking market.

Contrary to other vessels on the rivers today, the navigational bridge is located in the stern, behind the passenger section, thereby allowing for more spacious and gracious interior designs. The lounge and restaurant, located in the front of the vessel, give unimpeded views on three sides of the passing river landscape. The Sky Deck is a vast area for sunning, taking your pictures, or just relaxing!

The Avalon Tapestry® provides a complete break from the pressures of every day. The public rooms are elegant, and the dining room is extra spacious. The cuisine and wines on board will surpass your expectations. Pampered by our crew, our guests will make new friends and enjoy the casual camaraderie that leisurely cruising creates. You unpack only once, then enjoy life by lazing on the Sky Deck as timeless landscapes pass before you.

Avalon Tapestry® features the Silent Drive System (SDS) created to enhance guest experiences. SDS features ship engines located at the stern, separating it from the passenger compartment, allowing for a quieter cruise experience than traditional small ships.

Features exclusive to the Avalon Tapestry® staterooms:

  • Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors in most staterooms
  • French balconies in most staterooms
  • 20" Flatscreen satellite TV & radio
  • Private bathroom with shower
  • Comfortable, hotel-style beds
  • European-style duvets
  • Egyptian super-combed cotton linens

Laura rated this tour a 4 on 10/7/2009 10:48:19 AM and says:

"Here is our impression of the Avalon Poetry. We met Andreaj, our Tour Director, the first evening In Prague where we spent 3 nights at the Hilton. He was always most helpful and had lots of good advice. His job is a hard one as there were 4 busses for each included tour and at least 2 busses for each optional tour. Everything went on schedule and seamlessly so kudos to him. Every single tour whether included or optional was guided by a friendly, knowledgeable and humorous guide no matter what city. Lots of time we sailed at night due to the schedule but they make sure let us be on deck, cameras ready, to see the Wauchau Valley between Vienna and Budapest. It’s magnificent; all terraced lands and castles and villages. We also were on deck early to arrive in Budapest as the view of the Parliament and the Casle on the Buda side are incomparable. The Poetry is a lovely vessel which appears to be brand new. Even though it needs to be low and sleek to get through the locks and under the bridges, one never felt closed in. It’s bright, the cabins and bathrooms are fine and the spacious lounge and dining room afford great views. What really makes the cruise is the Staff. We were made to feel very welcome and throughout the entire cruise, every one was friendly and happy to be taking care of us. At the farewell dinner they put on a talent show that is amazing. No one will be discovered and made a star but the laughs were plentiful. Great fun. Every night in the lounge, we had a talented guitarist/piano player who was very entertaining and some regional talent was offered when we were docked in the evening. One night we had a marvelous violinist, and in Germany we had a beer lesson including tastes of different beers. Our last dinner had a trio perform tableside in the dining room so that we as fun as well. The breakfast and lunch buffets were abundant with choices, including an egg station (even on day of departure at 6AM) and the selection every day at lunch was great. Dinner offers two or three choices for entrée and we had some wonderful regional specialties. On nights where we had a tour or a concert, dinner was buffet and was about 1 ½ -2 hours. If there was no tour, dinner was so leisurely, it could be over two hours with the free wine flowing. The small size of the boat makes it possible to meet a lot of other passengers and as we all have like interests, it’s easy to make friends quickly with folks from all over. All in all, a great time was had by all. "
